Risk Factor: Smoking Alternatives

E-Cigarettes may seem like a good alternative to smoking because they do not contain tobacco. However, they do contain nicotine, which is derived from the tobacco plant. They are seemingly a better alternative because they are battery powered and do not produce smoke, instead producing the aerosol, or vapor, which can be used anywhere. Nicotine derived from e-cigarettes has a harmful effect on the mouth, tongue, and gums.

Nicotine may contribute to the development of gingivitis and periodontitis, which cause bad breath and inflammation throughout the body. Nicotine inhibits your body’s ability to produce saliva, which can leave your dry mouth susceptible to building up bacteria. This can cause bad breath and tooth decay. A key symptom of gum disease is increased blood flow to the gums. Nicotine reduces the amount of blood flow to your veins, masking a key indicator of gum disease. If left untreated, soft tissues and bone that supports teeth will be severely damaged resulting in tooth loss.

The use of e-cigarettes with nicotine can be very harmful to your oral health. Since gum disease may be masked by the lack of blood flow to the veins, it is especially important to visit your dentist regularly to be checked.
